Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about this treatment
Earwax (cerumen) is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps protect and clean the ear by trapping dust and debris, and usually works its way out on its own. Build-up happens when it doesn't clear naturally, or accumulates faster than it can be removed.
A few common causes include using cotton buds (which often push wax further in rather than removing it), wearing hearing aids or earphones regularly, having naturally narrow or hairy ear canals, or simply producing more wax than usual. It becomes a problem when it blocks the ear canal or causes symptoms.
No however most people find it comfortable, with at most a mild scratching or tickling sensation. It's generally more comfortable than ear syringing. If you experience any pain or discomfort at any point, please let your clinician know straight away so they can adjust or pause the procedure.
Most appointments take between 15–30 minutes, including a examination before and after the procedure.
We recommend using olive oil or a similar ear softening drop for 3–5 days before your appointment, as this makes wax removal easier and quicker. Your clinician can advise on this when you book.
Microsuction is often suitable in cases where syringing isn't recommended, as no water is used. However, this depends on your individual history, so your clinician will assess this during your consultation.
If your symptoms (muffled hearing, blocked feeling, tinnitus) are caused by wax build-up, most people notice an improvement immediately after the procedure.
